warning-message-overheating-iphone-3gs-3gsAmid unconfirmed reports that some 3GS iPhone are over heating and turning models with white cases a light brown, Apple has released a document that advises owners on how to use their devices to avoid potential damage caused by a silicon barbeque.

Apple says you should operate your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperatures are between 32º to 95º F (0º and 35º C ). Low- or high-temps might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store your iPhone where the temperatures are likely to stay between 4º to 113º F (-20º and 45º C). Leaving your iPhone in your car on a sunny day is not a good idea because inside temps in a parked car can exceed this range.

Some clues that the interior temp of you iPhone is beyond normal range are:

    • The device stops charging
    • Display dims
    • Weak cellular signal
    • Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it”

The warning message is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your iPhone, Apple says. If the message pops up on your display, turn the device off and let it cool down before firing it up again.

No worries: Even if you get the warning message, you’ll still be able to make emergency calls, Apple adds.

You’ll see the temp warning message under the following conditions, Apple says:

    • Leaving the device in a car on a hot day
    • Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time
    • Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight

For what it’s worth, I’ve been running my new iPhone 3GS nonstop since I received it 4-5 days ago and have not experienced any issues with over heating. In fact, the only issues I’ve experienced with the new phone is an over abundance of goodness.

memory-plus-concentration-board-game-iphoneMemory +, from Pearl Fisher Games, is similar to Concentration, where the trick is to flip card or boxes and recall the image on the opposite side and then pair it with an identical image hidden elsewhere on the playing board.

It’s a traditional memory game, of which there are several already in the App Store. Memory + takes the concept another step forward with four modes: singles, couples, mixed and classic.

In singles mode and mixed modes, the task is to find a single object among pairs (in other words, find objects without a mate). In couples and classic, the task is to find matching pairs. In couples, you’re directed to find a specified number of pairs (one, two or three). In classic mode, you have the options to set the table size from 4 x 3 to 6 x 4.

You play against the clock or by having the fewest number of mismatches possible. Read the rest of this entry »

    Remix Your Pix

    Filed under: iPhone Apps;

For those who have lots of photos and albums on their iPhone or iPod Touch, Pix Remix allows an even better way to share them. Pix Remix allows its users to create collages (complete with captions) and even mini-narratives to send to friends or share on sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It’s a great way to provide a picture play-by-play of what you’re doing or thinking, or just put together pictures you think are cool, with the added ability to personalize and send your creation. As the Pix Remix goes, you really are able to “turn your photos into shows.”

The exercises listed are comprehensive and are neatly tagged according to the body regions and muscle groups that they benefit. Drilling down into an exercise brings up photos of how it works, with tabbed pages for description/instructions, for a log (e.g. how many repetitions, what weights, etc), with all entries date stamped automatically and, after a few days of data, also plotted on a chart. Oddly, after bringing up the log screen, there’s no way back to the exercise screen – you have to return to the main index page and then drill in again, which seems a bit inefficient. In a word, yes, provided you tend to listen on your device’s tinny little speakers. In other words, for background music and companionship – we’re not talking CD quality here, not even stereo. How much of this is due to technical issues and bandwidth constraints and how much is due to the legal situation regarding the streaming of quality, copyrighted music, is up for debate, but it’s probably a bit of both. Errands are made easy with this app! You can create lists of people you want to share your errand lists with, so that everyone knows who is taking care of what (or what’s already been done) and what needs to do. You will never again forget a grocery store item or waste time going to take care of something that has already been attended to. Lists are consistently updated so that everyone knows what’s going on, and life is just a little more manageable and organized. Plus, with more people on tasks, they get done more quickly. Errand Tracker is certainly something you want in your life.

While it is nice to be able to watch movies from your iPhone, you can’t escape the fact that the screen is tiny. In our incredibly technologically progressive society, however, this does not have to be an issue. Many manufacturers, such as Vuzix, Myvu and 22Moo, are beginning to produce video glasses that you can connect to your iphone. These glasses enable to you to view your movies as if you were watching them on a nicely sized television screen. Some varieties, such as those created by iTheater, even allow you to use them as you play 3D games! The only current catch is they do cost a pretty penny (ranging from $200 to $500) , but if you’re patient, more affordable varieties should appear in the near future. Couple these glasses with Mobiola Video Studio (an application by SHAPE Services that allows you to convert your DVDs to an iPhone-compatible format), and you will have your whole home DVD and movie collection on-the-go and optimal for viewing.
